Good column. I was thinking about the New Yorker piece how the administration has removed all of the non partisan board members of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission except for its handpicked director who ended ongoing legal actions against American Bitcoin which Don Jr’s private equity fund partly owns. He’s co-opted the structures of government to pull the levers for his own corrupt agenda and wealth (like a slot machine). I don’t see how things return to the status quo of the pre Trump era. More likely we will need a ‘third constitution’ aimed specifically at corruption, the independence of the justice department, and reform of the Supreme Court with term limits among other things.

Actually, I am not looking to the status quo unless it is. carefully redefined. I am contending that the path to Trumpism began long ago. I concentrate on 10 examples in Reagan’s administration.

I love you example about the Commodities Future Trading Commison. I didn’t follow that as closely as you, and so I thank you.

Thank you very much for your contribution to the coversation. It is difficut to add up the many instances in which those levers of government are used despite the growing disgust of the nation, sans a solid majority of the Republican Party. I do not think we will return to the status quo. It will not work. I do believe we can use this horror show to demonstrate the need for deeper reform. Having identified what caused Trumpism we should be able to reverse many of them, but we must go well beyond that and tend to problems that have grown but only because of flaws that are now clear and must be corrected.
